The sky was filled with blue drakes circling an enormous ancient palace, glowing blue with magic. It has been said that nobody is allowed to set foot on this land unannounced or uninvited. Why then, am I here? What exactly did Lord Surristaz see in me? What was he expecting me to do here?
“Piket?” A young sorcerer came walking toward me, stepping around a few mages as they reinforced the protective shield. “We’ve been expecting you”. I wasn’t sure what to say, so I tried to play along as if I knew what was going on. “Yes, ma’am.” I replied, trying to sound confident.
“I am certain you are eager to stop this madness. I will not keep you. A small party awaits your arrival at the base of The Nexus.” The Nexus? Once again it appears my curiosity lead me to certain death. I wasn’t sure how I or any party of adventurers possibly defeat the most powerful Arcane spellcaster in all of Azeroth, but it seems I had no choice but to follow through.
So I walked through the Transitus Shield toward the fortress, coughing as the frozen air filled my lungs. It would have been nice if Lord Surristaz brought my ram. I trudged on towards the hovering disks. I found a series of shallow trenches tangled throughout the base of the tower. Following the largest path, I eventually made it to a wall that had been blown wide open.
Once inside, I was greeted by one lone Night Elf. “The others have started without you. Hurry!” Leaving no time for apologies, I followed suit, running down long, blue hallways filled with blue arcane magic. We eventually met up with the rest, as they fought a group of dragonkin. With my assistance, the dragonkin soon laid dead on the cold floor.
“I never thought I’d have to come here” a large Dranaei warrior said exhaustedly. I’ve heard tales of this place. Once Deathwing tried to eliminate the blue flight, it was unclear whether or not Malygos would be seen again. If only he’d share his wealth of knowledge with the people of Azeroth.” I wanted to interject with one of my many questions, but in fear of sounding foolish I kept quiet. “He must be stopped! This has gone too far! The Kirin Tor depend on us. Malygos has turned into a tyrant!”, a stout, angry mage replied.
The group continued on, and I followed. Through countless passageways and archways, we defeated group after group of Malygos’ mindless pons. Eventually we made it to a large hallway filled with what seemed to be ice sculptures. I took a closer look, and discovered that these weren’t sculptures at all. “So this is what happens to those who want to those who seek the scroll.”, the mage scoffed.
“What scroll?”, I asked him sheepishly. “The scroll that can forever reverse the undead filth from these lands. The scroll that can defeat the Lich King! The scroll that Malygos will protect blindly to the death!” Suddenly we heard a series of cracking sounds. The frozen warriors were coming alive again. We found ourselves immediately surrounded. I took action, joining the other warrior as we warded off the attack. It was a frantic battle. These warriors were clearly not working under their own will. Something did not want us there. We fought onward, pushing through the fortress. I forgot how good it felt to be in the thick of battle, as a part of a solid team, though I was still not sure what our true purpose was here.
“Keristraza won’t suffer much longer”, the Night Elf said optimistically. “Yes, we’ve defeated all but the last of them”, the Dranaei added. We stopped to rest, and realized that we were back where we started. I hadn’t noticed the first time. In a room straight ahead, a large red Drake sat frozen in a heap of ice. I spoke up, “Is that Keristraza?”. For a moment they all looked blankly at me. “Do you know not why we’re here?”, the mage asked indignantly as an angry scowl began to grow across his face. “Keristraza was taken and forced against her will by Malygos to be his personal consort! We owe it to her to kill her quickly! Your efforts are appreciated, warrior, but I doubt your intelligence.” This mage was beginning to make me upset. I unsheathed my weapon just as the Dranaei stepped in front of me. “We have a job to do, do not let your emotions blind you from our mission.”
He was right. I put my growing rage aside and joined the others as they entered the room. There were several orbs surrounding the frozen drake, and a few group members approached each of them. With their hands bearing down, the orbs began to glow. The ground shook as sheets of ice melted around the drake. As the final chunks of ice crashed to the ground, the Keristraza charged toward us with her eyes glowing an unnatural blue. “Keep moving!”, the Night Elf yelled. It seemed whenever I stopped, my body was hit with a pulse of arcane magic. So I ran around the parameter, while hitting the drake every chance I could.
Keristraza was taken and forced against her will by Malygos to be his personal consort! We owe it to her to kill her quickly!
The fight was exhausting, but eventually the Keristraza succumbed to her attackers. As the drake took her last breath, the arcane magic coursing through the air dissipated, and we were once again free to stand at will. We returned to the Transitus Shield where we shared the unfortunate demise of Keristraza. My uncertain mission was finally complete. While I was thankful that we were not chosen to face Malygos himself, I was sure that this wouldn’t be the end of my dealings with the blue dragonflight.
